The VDS scanner module maintains high reliability and does not require any network connection for scanning or signature verification, ensuring secure offline operation in any environment.
What is a VDS?
Secure Visible Digital Seals (VDS) are cryptographically signed data structures, typically encoded as 2D barcode, that store identity or document data in standardized format. Printed on physical documents, VDS codes can store multiple characters, far beyond the capacity of simple barcodes or MRZs.
Each VDS is structured according to a template which acts as a content index, indicating which data is included, such as name, date of birth, nationality, document type. Advanced VDS codes can incorporate biometric data in the form of facial landmarks.
A VDS also includes a cryptographic signature generated by the issuing authority, such as a government. To authenticate the signature and confirm the document’s integrity and correct issuance, a public key is needed. The VDS scanner module includes all keys distributed via the ICAO Public Key Directory, thus ensuring reliable verification of identity documents using a VDS.

How does the VDS scanner read data from a VDS?
The MOBILE SCAN SDK’s VDS scanner module automatically identifies and scans VDS codes when the scanning function is activated. The scanner authenticates the digital signature using the keys – your own or public available – to verify the authenticity of a VDS and returns the extracted data to your app. The VDS scanner module is optimized for offline, on-the-go conditions, and requires no network connection.
