The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommends the use of Visible Digital Seals (VDS) as a secure, globally interoperable, and cost-effective way to protect and verify identity credentials. The VDS Bio solution developed by kinegram.digital complements this technology with biometric facial landmarks. The combination of personal data and biometrics into a single, easily issued and verifiable token adds highly secure protection to any identity token.
At their basis, VDS elements are digitally signed and cryptographically encoded 2D barcodes, usually in the form of a Data Matrix code, that secure identity documents. They enable on- and offline, standard-compliant verification of who issued a document and whether its data were altered. The VDS Bio adds extra security and practicality by combining this with biometric facial landmarks of the digital credential or document holder, providing a consistent and interoperable digital trust layer.

Issuing and Verifying a VDS Bio
Offering a highly robust and proven solution for digital identity establishment and verification, the VDS Bio is simple and straightforward to integrate into any existing workflow for the issuance of identity credentials.
It can be issued in four simple steps:
1. On a dedicated VDS Bio application or website, enter the personal data and take a photograph of the designated holder.
2. The application derives a set of facial landmarks from the holder’s photograph and converts them into secure code.
3. The application then creates a secure Data Matrix code that includes the personal data and the facial landmarks, and asymmetrically encrypts it with your private key.
4. The VDS Bio can be digitally issued and transmitted to the holder, or printed on paper documents.
For the verification of VDS Bio elements, kinegram.digital provides a dedicated app. Alternatively, it can also be verified through your individual check app or a government- or NGO-provided app, following the prior addition of the corresponding public key. It is also backwards-compatible to standard VDS codes – therefore, the signature and biographic data can be verified by any standard VDS reader.
A simple scan with a smartphone then verifies the VDS Bio signature and data, and compares the facial landmarks to a live image or a photograph of the holder.
