The new configurable data group selection of MOBILE CHIP SDK can help organizations speed up their identity verification processes, strengthen data minimization, and improve user experiences.

kinegram.digital has introduced a new enhancement to MOBILE CHIP SDK that gives customers greater control over which data groups are read and verified during near-field communication (NFC)-based chip verification. By selecting only those data groups that are required for their specific use case, organizations and institutions can reduce the amount of data read from the chip of an electronic machine-readable travel document (eMRTD). This helps to accelerate digital identity verification processes while further supporting a privacy-first approach.

The new functionality applies to MOBILE CHIP SDK online, kinegram.digital’s thin-client SDK solution for remote identity check solutions where the actual identity verification logic happens on a secure server, not on an end user’s mobile phone. The enhancement is available to new and existing customers.

“We are pleased to make this new capability of MOBILE CHIP SDK available to our customers. The combination of even faster performance and increased data minimization is particularly valuable wherever verification efficiency and responsible data handling need to go hand in hand.”

Reading Necessary Chip Data Only

Customers using MOBILE CHIP SDK online can now choose from four pre-defined data group (DG) selections, or determine their own customized selection and specify which data groups should be read.

Selection of Data Groups*

Suitable Use Cases

.minimal reads DG1 only, which contains the eMRTD’s machine-readable zone (MRZ) datalower-risk scenarios, e.g. verifying returning users to a government service portal
.minimalKYC reads DG1 and DG2, adding the facial image to the MRZ datahigh-assurance identity verification with biometric verification for remote onboarding and KYC situations
.standard reads DG1, DG2, DG7, DG11 and DG12additional collection of holder’s signature and further personal and document details
.all reads all accessible data groups from DG1 to DG16additional collection of all available details, minimizing need for manual data entry (e.g. address details)

*DG1 and DG2 are defined as mandatory data groups for eMRTDs by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), i.e. these must be completed by the issuing authorities/governments. All other data groups are optional or country-specific.

Selecting only a limited number of data groups does not reduce the reliability of the authenticity checks which are performed during the chip reading and verification: The Security Object Document (SOD) is always read, as are DG14 for Chip Authentication and DG15 for Active Authentication, irrespective of the selected or customized data group configuration.

Faster Verification Processes, Greater Data Minimization

The amount of chip data being read affects the duration of an identity verification session. While verification speed also depends on factors such as the chip inside the eMRTD, NFC connection quality, and the size of the data within the data groups, limiting the workflow to the strictly necessary data can therefore help reduce the total duration and create a faster, smoother experience for end users.

This can be particularly valuable in remote onboarding journeys, where shorter verification processes can make it easier for end users to keep their identity document correctly positioned near their mobile phones during the reading, reduce uncertainty while a read is in progress, and help minimize avoidable dropouts.

“Data minimization is a key principle in chip-based remote identity verification solutions. I am proud that organizations and institutions can limit chip reading to the information strictly necessary for their specific process and use case with our MOBILE CHIP SDK.”
