Police offers must be able to reliably, efficiently and securely verify electronic machine-readable travel documents (eMRTDs), such as biometric passports. This is all the more relevant with both traveler numbers and global mobility on the rise, and as thousands of forgeries are detected annually in Switzerland, both at borders and during domestic checks. The CHIP VERIFY solution has become a key tool for police forces across Switzerland. It fills a crucial gap by offering a highly secure, fully mobile solution that also works offline.
Valérie Gallinet, Head of Forensic Science at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Canton of Aargau, explains: “Typical frontline solutions […] often have weaknesses in terms of data protection and data security.” In contrast, CHIP VERIFY operates in strict compliance with the ICAO 9303 standard and uses trusted sources such as the CSCA master list of the German Federal Office for Information Security.
Real-Time Results and Tangible Benefits
In Switzerland, CHIP VERIFY is not used as a native app, but integrated via Deeplink into MACS, the “Google of the police”. Christian Siri, ICT Quality & Problem Manager at the Zurich City Police, explains that when a travel document is checked via MACS, it is sufficient to scan its machine-readable zone (MRZ) with the smartphone. This will then enable access to the chip.
The CHIP VERIFY solution then ensures that the chip is authentic and has not been cloned or otherwise manipulated. In a second step, it reads a limited set of information, namely the personal data, the validity date, and the photograph. Christian Siri reassures: “At no time is any data transmitted outside of the solution.” Valérie Gallinet adds: “The fact that the app has no external dependencies, requires no additional tools, and certainly does not transmit any data is a significant advantage for data security.”

The interviewees confirm that CHIP VERIFY’s intuitive interface is very easy to use, making it especially helpful in stressful situations. Christian Siri describes the tool as a “huge relief for our frontline officers” for taking quick, robust and fact-based decisions. It helps Swiss police forces to maintain highest standards for document checks in the field.
